What’s red clover?
For this week’s Herb Spotlight we’re featuring red clover. This dynamic herb was found in our former line of tinctures, Sensual Healing. Find out why we chose this combination and just what benefits red clover brought to the blend!
History: Trifolium Pratense
Red clover is native to Europe and parts of Asia and Africa. It is primarily used as a tea, a salad herb, and in honey. At one point it was referred to as triphyllon, meaning “three leaves.” Both the stem and the flower are eaten by humans and animals alike. Because of red clover’s rapid growth and high nutritional value, it makes a great animal fodder. It is also an excellent source of nitrogen for the soil. Humans have been using it medicinally since the 1930’s when its anti-cancer properties were discovered. At one point it was referred to as hytoestrogens inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells, which is the reason why red clover has been promoted as a potential aid in the treatment of cancer.
Therapeutic Properties of the red clover
Red clover is rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin c. It is great for the heart! This dynamic herb supports reduced hypertension and inflammation in the blood vessels. It is well known for its benefits for PMS and menopause symptoms. Because its high in isoflavones, it helps balance estrogen levels. Estrogen is responsible for maintaining the reproductive organs in women; imbalanced estrogen levels can result in bone density loss, infertility, irregular cycles, and mood swings.
Although this herb is extremely supportive of women’s reproductive organs, it also has excellent therapeutic properties for men! Compounds within red clover have been found to block certain enzymes that cause prostate growth.
Why we used it
From our previous line, the Sensual Healing blend was a therapeutic formulary targeting and supporting healthy reproductive organs. This is an excellent ally for cramps, menstrual irregularities, mood swings, and libido support. With the support of maca, damiana, rosehips, and raspberry leaf, the Sensual Healing blend brings together these herbal properties and cannabis to support the body’s sex organs and their full expression.
We are constantly in awe of the plant world and are excited to share our knowledge on the subject. Tune in over the coming weeks for more herb spotlight posts as we continue to dive into the various herbs we use in our new products. Get the weekly updates on Tincture Thursdays!
