Functional Ingredients: A Look Inside Our Products

Selection of Ingredients

Medicine. It is in our name, and it is not a term we use loosely. So what exactly are we referring to? EVERYTHING is medicine, from our Soil To Oil philosophy to our final product. The functional ingredients we use in our infused products enhance the therapeutic profile of the cannabis. Join us on a journey inside the wholesome, quality ingredients that make up our consumables.

Let’s Start With Cannabis

We are entering an exciting time where a multitude of tools exist to help us know our medicine better. The importance of knowing the methods of cultivation, extraction, and production practices can’t be emphasized enough. It is the responsibility of patients to look into where their medicine is coming from, so that one may discern whether they agree with the practices the brand upholds. Here a few things to look for to help you make an informed decision on what is best for your specific needs.

  • Has the product been tested? Lab results can be printed directly on the packaged flower, extract, or edible, or available through the budtender. If testing cannot be provided move on to a product that can provide this information.
  • What am I looking for in the test results?
  • What is the method of extraction? To extract plant material to deliver a highly concentrated end product like extract, hash, and oil; a solvent has to be used. Chemical free solvents are preferred for the bodies ability to break it down, and these solvents are more sustainable for the environment.

Medicine Box upholds these standards by first testing the soil and the water, followed by the flower, extract, and the final products. We use a Supercritical CO2 extraction process — the cleanest, safest method for cannabis extraction.

Food As Medicine

Water, food, air, and movement are essential to our health. Since this form of energy intake occurs for most people multiple times a day, it is all the more important that mindfulness is upheld around food consumption. In Ayurvedic theory and lifestyle, food intake and patterns around eating are the first observed tendencies. To honor both the food and cannabis as medicine, we use local, organic, non-processed, and nutrient-rich foods in our consumables. Ingredients are meant to have a purpose. Highly processed foods and foods high in sugar are hard on the body’s systems. If the purpose of the medicine is to target a specific ailment or imbalance in the body and it’s simultaneously harming another system, it’s neutralizing the benefits. Functional ingredients enhance the cannabis medicine and provide a number of healthy fats, minerals, and sustenance. Here are a few examples of how we use functional ingredients:

  • Coconut Goji Berry Truffle: Goji berries are an excellent source of anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory support.
  • Peanut Butter & Banana Truffle: Bananas are an excellent source of potassium — which is an essential mineral needed in the body for a number of functions.
  • Happy Belly Tincture: Papaya enzymes aid in the breakdown of nutrients. The enzyme found in papaya is Papain — which aids in the breakdown of protein.
  • Smoked Almond Medicine Bar: In one serving of almonds, there are 6 grams of protein, magnesium and vitamin E.
